SUMMER SATURDAY JULY 14, 2018
The Woodland City Beach was open for tennis on Saturday as members enjoyed four rounds of mixed doubles in a beach themed summer social. It was a hot and sunny morning when twelve members of the Woodland and Davis Tennis Clubs took to the courts. The competition was fierce as pairs formed and played and reformed and played more. As the temperatures rose so did the level of play. It was a tight competition for the most games won with Marcail McWilliams and Karen Block battling for the top women’s spot with Marcail beating out Karen in the final round. On the men’s side Jack Jonas and Michael Mott were neck and neck throughout the morning until the final round where Jack managed to edge Mike out by just one game. The winners took home small plastic beach pails containing their Beach Hut Deli gift cards. The entire group convened around the surf board and sand toys after the morning’s round robin play for a traditional beach picnic of sandwiches, salad, watermelon and cookies. Special thanks to Margie McWilliams and Lenise Curtis for providing delicious salads for the event and to Margo Roeckl and Elaine McCain for coordinating the round robin play and social. The final Summer Saturday is coming up in August – see you on the courts!

The Daffodil Tournament
The Davis Daffodil Tournament was held in the morning on Saturday June 23 and it was hot enough on the courts to wilt any daffodils still in bloom! It could have been the named the Desert Classic with the temperature cresting at 100 degrees by noon. Despite the heat, 12 doubles teams competed in Men’s Women’s and Mixed Divisions. Congrats to our winners:
Men’s Dubs - Dennis Anderson & John Katonah
Women’s Dubs – Kelli O’Neill & Joyce Loeffler
Mixed Dubs 3.5 –Susan Kauzlarich & Chris Dewees
Mixed Dubs 3.0 – Elaine & Tim Snow
There was some fine tennis played out there in the heat and the wind! The competition was fierce, the tennis fun and the food plentiful. Honorable mention to Kathy and Larry Drager who went three sets 1-6 6-1 4-6 and had a fantastic match against the Snows!
A big thank you to the team behind this event – Tournament Coordinator Margo Roeckl, Board Member emeritus Chris Dewees, and fellow Board members Janine Carlson, Kelli O’Neill and Grace Vaughn. The Davis Tennis Club hopes to make this an annual event and a companion to the Woodland Tennis Club’s Frostbite Tournament.
Playing tennis at City Park has been upgraded with the mural created by James Ousey and his daughter Jennifer. Sherwin-Williams provided the paint and Jennifer did the art work. Thank you
